Why We Don’t Do Black Friday – And What We Choose To Do Instead

Every year, as Black Friday rolls around, we watch inboxes flood with “80% OFF!!”, flashing countdown timers, and offers that seem almost too good to be true. And in many cases—they are. As a small independent business, we simply can’t (and don’t want to) compete with mass-produced, high-volume, heavily-discounted retail. But more importantly—we don’t believe that frantic consumerism reflects who we are, or what our community values.

Instead of slashing prices to the bone, we’re sticking with what we’ve done for five years now:
a genuine 10% off for the whole weekend – our way of thanking the people who support us all year long
❤️ and donating 10% of all Black Friday takings to charity

This year, we’re supporting two causes very close to our hearts: Save the Children and the NSPKU (National Society for Phenylketonuria).

Why the NSPKU Matters to Us

This one is personal. Last year, my niece was diagnosed with Phenylketonuria (PKU)—a rare inherited metabolic disorder that affects how the body processes protein. In simple terms, people with PKU cannot properly break down phenylalanine, an amino acid found in many everyday foods. If untreated, phenylalanine builds up in the blood and brain, leading to serious neurological and cognitive effects.

That means strict dietary management is for life
– low-protein foods
– medical formula
– careful measuring and tracking
– constant monitoring

What looks simple on the outside—just food choices—actually becomes a daily medical balancing act. And that’s where the NSPKU comes in.

The Work of the NSPKU

The NSPKU does extraordinary work, supporting individuals and families across the UK with:

  • Critical dietary guidance and resources for affected children and adults

  • Legislative advocacy, campaigning for better access to medical foods and prescriptions

  • Research support, working toward better understanding and better treatment

  • Community connection, ensuring families never feel alone or overwhelmed

  • Practical advice for parents, especially following a new diagnosis

For families like ours navigating PKU for the first time, their support is invaluable. They help make a lifelong condition feel manageable—and that emotional support is just as vital as the medical side.

A Kinder Approach to the Season
